Just a few hours ago, Gmail was trending on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). The fake email said that Google is sunsetting Gmail in 2024 and won’t be available to use after August 1, 2024. Some created humor around the whole thing, whereas some users genuinely got confused. Many users actually believed that the mail was true and started criticizing Google. Some users even started creating accounts on other email providers.
Google also noticed the fake news being spread and the official Gmail account posted on X, “Gmail is here to stay,” thereby clarifying the whole situation.

What’s the Real Truth?
The truth is, Google announced last year that Gmail’s basic “HTML View” will become unavailable in 2024. The basic “HTML View” was suitable for slower internet connections and outdated browsers. It lacked a lot of new features, such as chat, spell checker, keyboard shortcuts, and more, which are present in the current “standard view” of Gmail. So Google decided to remove it in 2024.
Apart from that, the current “standard view” of Gmail will continue to work fine, and it is not going to shut down in the near future. Gmail is one of the most brilliant products of Google, and a lot of users use Google with their Gmail accounts. Google is instead planning to add new AI features by integrating Gemini into Gmail.
Conclusion
It is hard to believe how users easily believe everything on the internet and even think of Google removing Gmail. But it is evident how social media can be used to generate false information and make people believe in it. It is advisable to always double-check any information you see online before trusting it.
