According to some reports, Apple is going to partner with Chinese-based AI company Baidu to integrate AI features into upcoming Apple products, including the iPhone 16 for users in China. Apple and Baidu will partner together to bring on-device AI features.
Reportedly, Apple recently had talks with Google about adding Gemini’s AI features to its upcoming iPhones. Apple previously had talks with OpenAI regarding the same.
Why Apple and Baidu?
China requires all large language models to be first checked by China’s cyberspace regulatory body before being deployed to the public. OpenAI’s AI models and Google’s Gemini do not operate in China, so the only option for the Cupertino-based tech giant was to take the help of a local AI company, which is already approved by China’s cyberspace regulatory body.
Apple reportedly also communicated with Alibaba and another Chinese company, but they selected Baidu AI.
Know More About Baidu
Baidu is one of China’s biggest AI companies. Baidu launched its AI chatbot, ERNIE, last year in August, which leverages the power of its Large Language Model, Ernie 4.0. The chatbot in December 2023 had more than 1 million users.
According to reports, Apple and Baidu will work together to bring on-device AI features to the upcoming iPhone 16.
Conclusion
Apple is working hard on incorporating AI into its products. Apple recently had talks with OpenAI and Google to bring on device AI. With the Apple and Baidu partnership, it seems pretty clear that they are not going to let any other brand take the upper hand in this AI race. It will be interesting to see what Apple is going to do at Worldwide Developers Conference 2024, the upcoming major event for Apple, which is expected to showcase AI features in the upcoming iPhones and the most-awaited iOS 18 update.
