Instagram is going to add a new “Friend Map” feature similar to Snapchat’s current “Snap Map” feature. In a recent post on X, Alessandro Paluzzi shared about Meta’s Plan of Friend Map feature on Instagram. With Snapchat’s Snap Map, users can share their location with their friends and also view their friends’ locations. Instagram earlier also copied stories from Snapchat, and now with Friend Map, it seems that Instagram just copied another feature from Snapchat.
Add notes to the Friend Map
Alessandro posted some screenshot images in his post, which show that a new feature will also allow users to add notes on the map that can be viewed by friends. Currently, Instagram’s notes feature is available in a user’s direct messaging feed section.

Share location with Followers
Another screenshot suggests that users will be able to select friends who can see their location. It will consist of a “ghost mode,” which will hide your last active location from everyone. Users can also select “close friends” or “followers who follow back” to view their location.
According to the screenshot, a user’s location sharing will be end-to-end encrypted, and anything a user shares with a location tag will show on the map. It also says that your location is only updated when you open Instagram.

When will the Friend Map be available?
Currently, there is no news about when Instagram is going to launch the friend map feature in their app, but according to the images, it seems that the friend map will come soon in the beta version of Instagram for testing before the final release.
