OpenAI Multi-factor Authentication

OpenAI just announced that users can now protect their ChatGPT and API accounts by turning on multi-factor authentication. OpenAI is expected to announce GPT 5 soon, so this feature adds an extra layer of protection to users’ accounts.

OpenAI posted about the information on social media platform X and mentioned, “You can now add extra security to your ChatGPT and API accounts by turning on multi-factor authentication. Set it up in account > settings.”

How to turn on multi-factor authentication on your ChatGPT Account

Follow these steps to turn on multi-factor authentication on your ChatGPT account:

  • Click on your account profile at the bottom left of the screen and go to settings.

  • In the General section, you will find multi-factor authentication. Click on the enable button present there.

  • Now you will see a QR code; scan it with any authenticator app of your choice, for example, Google Authenticator.

  • After scanning with your preferred authenticator app, you will get a code.

  • Enter the code in the text field present below the QR code.

  • Now you will get a recovery code. It is important to copy and store the code somewhere safe, as it will help you log in when you don’t have your device on which the authenticator app is installed.

  • After copying, tick the checkbox giving assurance, and then click on continue. Multifactor authentication is now enabled for your ChatGPT account.

If you want, you can also disable multifactor authentication in the future by clicking on disable and entering the code from the authenticator app.
