A former Google employee has been accused of stealing AI trade secrets from the company. The name of the employee is Linwei Ding. He lives in Newark, California. He was hired by Google in 2019 and was working as a software engineer for the company.

Ding was found stealing AI trade secrets from Google, and he was secretly sharing that information with two China-based startup companies and was allegedly working with them.

Know the Complete Story

Ding had access to Google’s hardware structure and AI models. He was given the role of developing software for Google’s supercomputing data centers, which play a major role in Google’s AI operations.

Google found out that some of the company’s confidential information was getting leaked and was suspicious of Linwei Ding. After investigation, it was found that Linwei Ding took unfair advantage of his access to confidential information and was uploading a ton of confidential files to his Google Personal Cloud for over 2 years.

Just after a few months of stealing and sharing information, Linwei Ding was offered the position of CTO at an early-age AI startup company in China. He also founded his own startup in China focused on producing large-language AI models powered by supercomputing chips.

In the investigation, it was found that Ding was taking the help of his coworker, who scanned his access badge for him at Google’s office in the USA, to make it look like Ding was in Google’s office in the USA while he was working on his startup in China.

The FBI sealed his electronic devices and found 500+ files of confidential information stolen from Google.

Punishment If Convicted

He is charged with four counts of federal trade secret theft. If convicted, he will have to face imprisonment for up to 10 years and a $250,000 fine for each count. So if convicted on all four counts, he will have to face imprisonment for up to 40 years and pay a $1 million fine.
