OpenAI to Now add AI to Humanoid Robots

OpenAI has invested in Figure AI, a startup building humanoid robots. OpenAI has also done a collaboration deal with Figure AI to develop next-generation AI models for humanoid robots. The robots will be used to do undesirable and dangerous jobs. OpenAI mentioned the collaboration deal with Figure on social media platform X. 

Figure says, “The collaboration aims to help accelerate Figure’s commercial timeline by enhancing the capabilities of humanoid robots to process and reason from language.”

Figure further reveals that it will use Microsoft Azure for AI infrastructure, training, and storage.

Figure Raises $675 Million Investment 

Figure was founded in 2022. It has raised $675 million at a $2.6 billion valuation. 

According to Figure, the investment will accelerate commercial deployment of humanoid robots and will be used for AI training, manufacturing and deploying more robots, hiring more engineers, and advancing commercial deployment efforts.

It is backed by big tech brands and popular business figures. Besides OpenAI, the other list of investors includes Jeff Bezoz (through Bezos Expeditions), NVIDIA, Microsoft, Intel, Parkway Venture Capital, ARK Invest, and Align Ventures.

About Figure’s Figure 01 Robot

Figure last month showed a video featuring Figure 01, a robot that moves like humans. The video consisted of Figure 01 making coffee only using neural networks.

Recently, another video of Figure 01 picking up a plastic crate and placing it on a conveyer belt was uploaded by the company.

Other Companies Developing Humanoid Robots

Figure Recently partnered with BMW for automotive production. Along with Figure, there are many other companies that are making their own humanoid robots. 

Amazon is testing Agility Robotics’ digit robot for warehouse work. 

OpenAI has also invested in 1XTechnologies, which is developing humanoid robots and has recently raised $100 million.

NASA is working with Apptronik to develop a humanoid robot for space exploration.

Tesla and Boston Dynamics are also working on developing their own humanoid robots.

Conclusion

Humanoid AI robots can be really useful, as they will be able to do undesirable and dangerous jobs. It looks like humanoid robots will soon be used in actual workplaces. 

OpenAI is diving deep into AI, and it shows that they are not going to settle only with chatbots. Their collaboration with Figure shows that they are going to put GPT-5 into Figure’s robots.
