South Korea’s government is using AI dolls to help the elderly people of the country fight loneliness and also to treat some dementia patients so that they can be better taken care of. The South Korean government has distributed around 7,000 AI-powered dolls to seniors and dementia patients. The AI companion dolls are made by the company HYODOL, and it was showcased at MWC 2024.

The doll is extremely helpful in reminding seniors about medicine intake, meal intake, or providing emotional support by interacting with them.

Features of HYODOL’s AI Doll

With the help of the Large Launguage model, Hyodol’s AI doll can carry out full conversations. The AI doll comes in boy and girl versions and comes with various features, including touch interaction, 24-hour voice reminders, check-ins, voice messages, a health coach, quizzes, exercise, music, and more.

The AI doll consists of a microphone, various sensors, and speakers, and it is always watching the user. It also comes with safety features to alert you when no movement has been detected for a certain period of time.

It comes with a companion app and web monitoring platform that easily helps caretakers monitor the patient remotely.

With the help of the app, the caretaker can also send or receive voice messages, make group announcements, and monitor motion detection.

Shows Great Results

According to Hyodol, a study conducted on over 9000 users found that their AI-companion doll helped to reduce depression levels from 5.73 to 3.14 and improved medicine intake from 2.69 to 2.87.

Price of Hyodol’s AI Doll

The AI-powered doll is currently available for $1800 and can be purchased via Hyodol’s official website.

Conclusion

South Korea’s population of elderly people is rapidly growing, and the country has one of the lowest birth rates. This makes it difficult for the healthcare sector to take care of elders. The government believes the AI dolls will help them tackle this difficult situation. Although there will be some security and privacy concerns, the technology shows fascinating results and seems pretty cool.
